Victory in Red
After recent findings in healthy benefits obtained from the modest consumption of red wine, consumers can now choose the color red without much hesitation. Intriguingly, the skins and seeds of red grapes hold a compound called resveratrol- now a victor in its life-extending properties.
Resveratrol is an anti-inflammatory agent with antioxidant roles. It has been seen to prolong the life of worms, yeast, and fruit flies.
According to researchers in Johns Hopkins University, modest intake of red wine has been shown to protect the brain from damage post stroke. A study conducted in mice suggested that resveratrol increases the level of a protective enzyme in the brain, which helps to defend nerve cells.
In the realm of weight loss, a study done on lemurs (in France) have also shown improving effects in metabolism and energy intake. After the supplementation of resveratrol in these animals, there was a decrease in food intake and in body mass gain. Such results are promising to the treatment of obesity.
To conclude these advantageous results, a human study from the University of Buffalo showed resveratrol’s healthful effect in preventing the generation of free-radicals (which is responsible for damage to our cells and blood vessel lining).
With such triumphant outcomes, wine drinkers everywhere are saying “yes” to red.
